PRAISE OF THE LAND

The Story:
Have you ever wondered what the true significance of the Shivas HaMinim is? Are they simply the best fruit that Eretz Yisroel produces?
The Gemara teaches that the significance of the Shivas HaMinim is that each one of the Shivas HaMinim teach us some halachah regarding measurements.
Rav Chanin said (Sukkah 5b-6a):
Wheat – Wheat bread is used in measuring the amount of time one must be in a tzaraas afflicted home to contract a more severe tumah, one that extends to the clothing he is wearing.
Barley – A human bone fragment the size of a barley kernel imparts tumah through contact or when it is carried.
Grapes – This teaches the volume of wine/grape products for which a nazir is liable, namely the amount that would displace a reviisof wine.
Figs – The minimum amount for which one is liable for carrying on Shabbos from one domain to another is a dried fig.
Pomegranates – A vessel will lose its tumah if it gets a hole the size of a pomegranate.
Olives – are generally used as the minimum measurement in many halachos, in areas such as tumah, cheilev and some disqualified korbanos.
Date – The minimum size for which one is liable for eating on Yom Kippur is a large date.
